Info Lit Assignment: Journal Articles

The life and work of the thinkers you are studying this semester have drawn the enduring interest of scholars, in their own lifetimes up through the present.

This assignment asks you to find two journal articles about a thinker that were published during two distinct time periods. The two articles should treat the same or similar theme or topic with respect to the thinker.

Asssignment Goals:

  • To explore how academic interests, perspectives, and attitudes change over time
  • To develop basic research skills
  • To learn proper citation formats

Suggestions...

  • Do some preliminary research before choosing the 1) the author/thinker and 2) the theme or topic. It is not always possible to find sources on just the theme or topic you would like. Be creative in reformulating your ideas based on the kinds of articles you find.
  • Journal articles are also known as research articles, scholarly articles or peer-reviewed articles. Journals are also known as academic journals, scholarly journals, and peer-reviewed journals. (However, not all scholarly journals are peer-reviewed scholarly journals.) Like many things, the language is not always precise.
  • To get a better understanding of what consitutes a journal article, see the Popular vs. Scholarly tab in this guide.

How do I find information on a publication?

1) In Proquest databases, click on the Citation/Abstract of a record, then click on the link in the Publication title field.

2) In EBSCO databases, in the record click on the link in the Source field.

2) In JSTOR, look for the link to Publication Info.

3) For journals that still exist, check out their web sites.

4) Wikipedia is often a good place to get information on a publication, but double-check the information by looking elsewhere as well.
