Welcome!

"Assessing primary sources is a key skill for historians. Students will be required to submit a 1000 word essay evaluating and comparing the utility and reliability of two primary sources relating to the Weimar Republic" (syllabus, p. 2). Click on the tabs above to find databases and other useful tools for locating primary (archival) and secondary sources housed at Temple University Libraries and at other libraries throughout the Delaware Valley.

The boxes on this page provide links to various military historiographies; books written to help students locate and evaluate primary sources; a video tutorial that explains how to use Temple's ILLiad system for borrowing materials from other libraries; and two databases, RefWorks and Reference Universe, that respectively help researchers easily manage their citations and find reliable background information about their topics.

Historiography: Definition & Discussion

The term historiography defies simple definition, but at its core implies a concern for the examination of all aspects of historical scholarship, including especially the writing of history and the methods of historical research. It can also refer to a single scholarly work or body of historical literature, e.g. "the historiography of World War I". Find below links to discussions centered on military historiography.

RefWorks

Manage your citations with RefWorks, a tool that allows researchers to easily import, export, search, and create automatically formatted bibliographies online. Citations found via searches in library databases such as JSTOR can be imported directly into RefWorks. No manual typing required. Bibliographies generated within RefWorks can then be exported into Word using any of dozens of citation formats (Chicago, Turabian, etc.).

Don't forget to check your results against the examples derived from Chicago Style in the Undergraduate History Handbook.

Reference Universe

Reference Universe is a unique database that makes transparent both printed and online reference material that might otherwise remain hidden. It searches back-of-the-book indexes and article titles in thousands of encyclopedias and other reference works owned by Temple University Libraries.
