General Tips

Many databases offer search options that can help limit your searches. For example, you can limit searches by journal title, year, and author's name.  Search options will  direct you to the most relevant results very quickly. The tips listed below guide you in using search options in a couple of databases.  Most databases that you will use at Temple will have similar features.

Finding Articles in Specified Journals/Periodicals

Find a New York Times newspaper article that discusses dinosaur embryos

  • Go to Database Finder and enter Access World News, a comprehensive newspaper database.
  • In the first search box enter "New York Times" and then select Source in the drop box to the left of the search box (this will limit your search to only New York Times articles).
  • In the second search box, enter dinosaur embryo and then select All Text.
  • Look at the results list and find an article that is relevant to your topic.

Find an article in Nature, written by Norell and others that discusses nesting in dinosaurs

  • Go to Database Finder and enter Academic Search Premier, a comprehensive database covering a wide range of subjects.
  • In the first search box enter Nature and then select SO Journal Name in the drop box to the right of the search box (this will limit your search to only Nature articles).
  • In the second search box, enter in author's name and then select AU Author in the drop box to the right of the search box (this will limit your search to only articles written by the author's name you entered).
  • Look at the results list and find an article that is relevant to your topic.
