Reference Shelf
Consult traditional reference books to explore possible research topics. Reference books help researchers contextualize their topics and in turn begin to ask the right questions. Reference books set the stage for more efficient database searching; researchers cannot elicit relevant search results if they don't know which keywords (or search terms) to use. Last but not least, scholarly reference books contain bibliographies that can lead researchers to the most respected secondary and most useful primary sources.
Research Paper - Compile a Bibliography (5% of your grade)
Researchers must be able to identify the most respected scholarly works on any given topic. One way to do this is simply to ask someone who knows, often your professor or a librarian. A generally more comprehensive method is to consult a published bibliography. Bibliographies range in length from whole books to "Works Cited" sections in scholarly books and journal articles to "Further Reading" sections following encyclopedia articles. For this assignment you must compile your own bibliography consisting of at least ten diversified primary and secondary sources.
In Diamond and other library catalogs the term Bibliography is used as a sub-heading in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) field to identify bibliographical works. Enter one or more terms related to your topic into the pre-formatted text box below to retrieve bibliographies available at Temple University Libraries. Once you have found a relevant bibliography, examine it carefully for potential sources for your paper.

The following Temple databases index and in many cases provide full-text access to the peer-reviewed journal literature, i.e. secondary literature, of European history during the period 1939 to 1995.

- American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES)Find bibliographic records for journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, and selected government publications that cover North American scholarship on Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former republics of the Soviet Union.
- British Humanities Index
An international abstracting and indexing tool for research in the humanities, BHI indexes 320+ internationally respected humanities journals, weekly magazines and newspapers published in the U.K. and other English-speaking countries. Covers 1962 to date. - FRANCIS (International Humanities & Social Sciences) Covers a wide range of multilingual, multidisciplinary scholarship in the humanities (67%), social sciences (30%), and economics (3%) from 1984 to date. Strong in the humanities, with special emphasis in religion, art history, psychology, and literature.
- Historical Abstracts Provides article abstracts from journal literature on the history and culture of the world, excluding the United States and Canada, from 1450 to the present.
- History of Science, Technology and MedicineIndexes journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations. Covers 1976 to date.
- International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS)Includes nearly 2 million bibliographic references to journal articles and books, reviews and selected chapters dating back to 1951. IBSS is unique in its broad coverage of international material and incorporates over 100 languages and countries.
- JSTORJSTOR is the premier scholarly journal archive. The Arts and Sciences I, II, III, IV, and Complement Collections offer full-text access to more than 60 core history journals dating back in some cases to the early twentieth century.
- PAIS InternationalCitations to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, international agency publications, microfiche, and websites. No newspapers. Covers 1915 to date.
- Periodicals Archive Online (PAO) PAO "is a major online periodical archive that makes the [full-text] backfiles of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences available electronically." PAO currently offers access to 450 journals spanning some 300 years.
- Periodicals Index Online (PIO) PIO "is an electronic index to millions of articles published in over 5,000 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences. It is unique in combining a broad subject base with deep chronological coverage going back over 300 years."
- Project MUSE Project MUSE, a joint venture of the Johns Hopkins Press and Milton S. Eisenhower Library, provides full-text access to the Press's scholarly journals. Over 40 important history titles are included. Coverage begins in 1995.
- World History Collection World History Collection consists of a subset of Ebsco's Academic Search Premier database covering only the history journals. Titles include European Review of History, Central European History, and Diplomatic History.
Research Paper - Find PRIMARY Sources
The majority of primary sources remain available only in paper. Such sources can take the form of reproductions of letters and diaries published in commonly-held books, or rare manuscripts available only in a single archive. Identify primary-source documents in Diamond by looking for certain LCSH sub-headings: Sources, Personal Narratives, Pictorial Works, etc.. Examples:

- AP ImagesAbout 800 photos per day feed into this photo archive moments after moving onto the AP's spot picture system. Over 3 million U.S. and international photos, from 1826 to present. Also includes over 60,000 graphics, charts, and timelines.
- ARTstorARTstor is a digital library of art images, associated information, and software tools designed to enhance teaching, learning and scholarship. ARTstor contains approximately 500,000 images of art, architecture and archeology from a wide range of cultures.
- Conditions & Politics in Occupied Western Europe Conditions and Politics in Occupied Western Europe, 1940-1945, features full-text documents received in the British Foreign Office from all European states under Nazi occupation during World War II.
- The Gerritsen Collection: Women's History Online, 1543-1945 This database constitutes a tremendous collection for the study of women's history around the world. While most material is pre-20th century, Gerritsen does contain documents dealing with the role of women in Europe during World War II.
- In The First Person (FIRP)FIRP indexes and links to "first-person" material in selected Alexander Street Press databases including Oral History Online and the free web. It indexes oral histories, letters, diaries, autobiographies, etc.
- Oral History OnlineThis database indexes over 2,700 oral history collections in English from around the world. Click "Places" on the Homepage, followed by the plus (+) icon next to the word Europe on the resulting page. Also links to some 4,100 audio and video files.
- Times [of London] Digital Archive (1785-1985)A searchable, full-text image archive of every page of the (London) Times from 1785 to 1985.

Chicago Manual of Style
Online version of the well-known style guide now in its 16th edition. Historians employ this style almost exclusively, but so do researchers in many other disciplines. Also consider the Temple University Writing Center's guide to the Chicago Style (15th ed.).
RefWorks
Manage your citations with RefWorks, a tool that allows researchers to easily import, export, search, and create automatically formatted bibliographies online. Citations found via searches in library databases such as JSTOR can be imported directly into RefWorks. No manual typing required. Bibliographies can be generated within RefWorks and then exported into Word using any of dozens of citation formats (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).
EuroDocs
EuroDocs is an online directory of primary documents in Western European history compiled by Richard Hacken, librarian at Brigham Young University.
