Even in history, the all-important scholarly monograph does not necessarily tell the whole story. When it comes to tenure, promotion, and merit, articles published in peer-reviewed journals and presentations delivered at academic conferences hold some weight. Beyond the question of tenure, scholars might simply wish to assess the impact of their work on the discipline.
