RefShare
RefShare allows you to share your RefWorks bibliographies with other users both in and outside the University. Shared bibliographies can be hidden, requiring that you give a URL to another user, or they can appear on the Temple RefShare page for anyone to find and access.
You can control how much access others have to your bibliography, including whether they can export the citations. Commenting can be turned on for shared bibliographies as can RSS feeds for notification of newly added references.
One example of researchers sharing their bibliographies through RefShare is the Temple Music Therapy Database.
For more information see these Tutorials on using RefShare.
Introduction
RefWorks allows you to:
- Create a personal database online - Store an unlimited number of records, accessible from any computer linked to the Internet. No downloading software or installation required.
- Import references automatically - RefWorks can easily import search results from a wide variety of databases.
- Organize references - Sort and search your stored references quickly and easily.
- Format bibliographies and manuscripts - Save hours of typing and decrease the number of errors in creating tedious bibliographies. Easily make changes and reformat your bibliography in seconds.
- Attach files to your citations - You are allotted 100MB of file storage for attaching files (of up to 5MB each) to your citations.
RefWorks requires an individual account. To get one, follow the "Access RefWorks" link, then click on the "Sign Up for an Individual Account" link that appears in the login box.
When you leave Temple your account will continue to work for as long as the library renews its access to RefWorks. For alumni access use this login url. You will need the Temple group code. If you don't know the group code go to the RefWorks login page and find the link that says “forgot your login?” Select this link and enter the e-mail address that you used when registering for your RefWorks account. Your login name, password and group code will be e-mailed to you.
Write-N-Cite (MSWord Integration)
RefWorks Write-N-Cite utility allows RefWorks users to access their bibliographies from within Microsoft Word. This enables easier creation of in-text citations as well as works cited pages or bibliographies. You must have a RefWorks account to use Write-N-Cite.
Download Write-N-Cite (all versions).
To set up Write-N-Cite to work from off-campus, you must either:
A. Use the "Group Code". If you don't know the group code go to the RefWorks login page and find the link that says “forgot your login?” Select this link and enter the e-mail address that you used when registering for your RefWorks account. Your login name, password and group code will be e-mailed to you.

- Click OK.

- Select Preferences from the Write-N-Cite menu.
- Select the Proxy option and enter the URL: https://libproxy.temple.edu:2343/login?url=http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
- Restart Write-N-Cite for this proxy configuration to take effect.

Troubleshooting:
Pop-up Blockers and RefWorks:
If you are having trouble with RefWorks when using Internet Explorer 7 (IE) and exporting from some databases (Ebsco in particular), you can add the database and RefWorks as trusted sites in IE:
- From the IE menu, select Tools => Internet Options.
- Select the Security tab then select the Trusted sites Zone and click on the Sites button.
- In the Trusted Sites window, unselect the option to Require server verification and add the following to your trusted sites list: *.refworks.com and *.epnet.com (for Ebsco)
Write-N-Cite on Windows:
Some issues on Windows may be cause by Windows' Firewall blocking Write-N-Cite's access to the internet. Try this to add Write-N-Cite as an exception for the Firewall:
- Click on Start >> Control Panel >> Security Center >> Windows Firewall, this should open the firewall settings dialog box.
- Click on the Exceptions tab at the top of the firewall dialog box.
- Click the button that says Add Program.
- Click Browse to browse to the location of the WriteNCite.exe file on your computer, it should be in the following directory: C:\Program Files\Refworks\WriteNCite.exe
- Select the program and click Ok to close the Add Program box.
- It should now appear in the list of exceptions with a check mark.
Write-N-Cite and MSWord Not Cooperating:
There is currently a problem with Write-N-Cite III in which it does not recognize the MS Word document and fails to insert in-text citations. Refworks (the company) is working to resolve the problem. As a workaround Refworks recommends:
- "First, the user open their Task Manager and shut down every Write-N-Cite process that might be running.
- "Then open MS Word and then the Write-N-Cite plug-in.
- "The other method is to restart the computer which will achieve the same results as using the Task Manager."
Downloading Records from Diamond: The Libraries' Catalog
There are two ways to export records from Diamond: The Libraries' Catalog.
1) You can use the native Refworks interface to search Diamond (as well as hundreds of other open source library catalogs).
Step 1: From the Refworks "Search" menu click on "Search Online Catalog or Database"
Step 2: Select "Temple University - Diamond" to search.
Step 3: Use "Advanced Search"
2) You can create a text file in Diamand, download it to your computer, and then import it into Refworks.
Step 1a: From the bibliographic record of an item in Diamond, click on "Save Record" at the top of screen. Repeat this step for each book you want to export.
Step 1b: From a results list in Diamond, click in the checkbox on the left of each item you'd like to export. Once you're done selecting, click on "Saved Mark to Email or Export" at top left.
Step 2: Click on "Export/Email" at top.
Step 3: Click on Full Display on left (Not "EndNote/Refworks"); click on Local Disk; then click on "Submit"
Step 4: You should get some sort of dialog box saying that you are downloading a file. Save the file to your computer.
Step 5: From within Refworks, go to the References menu item and click on "Import"
Step 6: For "Import Filter/Data Source", select Innovative Interfaces INNOPAC; For "Database", select "Temple University - Diamond"; "Import Refererences into file" is optional
Step 7: Browse for you text file in the "Import Data from the following Text File" field
Step 8: Click "Import"
