Requires three mouse clicks to reach the book's record in Diamond.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to learn how to set up a similar bibliography for a class project.

Book Databases

With the exception of MERLN, the following databases provide access to full-text eBooks. Reference books -- dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, etc. -- serve as excellent starting points for your research.

ABC-CLIO eBooks

This database consists of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works.

Selected ABC-CLIO eBooks:

ACLS Humanities E-Book Project

This database currently provides access to over 1,200 full-text history books. The project's goal is to offer undergraduate researchers a core collection of secondary history texts.

Selected ACLS eBooks:

California Digital Library

An ambitious digitization project undertaken by the University of California Libraries. While relatively few titles are available to the general public, several works -- including those listed below -- are accessible without restriction.

Selected California Digital Library eBooks:

CIAO Books (Columbia International Affairs Online)

CIAO Books will appeal to those studying force and diplomacy, international affairs, and military history.

Selected CIAO eBooks:

CredoReference [formerly XReferplus]

EAI, Series I "is the definitive resource for every aspect of life in the 17th- and 18th-century British colonies of North America, from. . . foreign affairs, diplomacy. . . the Revolutionary War. . . and just about any other topic imaginable" (NewsBank).

Click the Subjects tab. Choose Military from the list of topics. Among the 76 subtopics listed can be found books on:

African American Soldiers Mutiny
Armies Prisoners of War
Cavalry Recruiting and Enlistment
Conscientious Objectors Soldiers
Desertion, Military Spies
Diplomatic and Consular Service Standing Army

Military Art and Science War

Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker (1801-1819)

Covering every aspect of life during the early decades of the United States, this rich primary source collection provides full-text access to 36,000 American books, pamphlets and broadsides published in the first nineteen years of the nineteenth century.

Early English Books Online (EEBO)

From the first book published in English through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare, this collection contains over 96,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475 - 1640), Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700), and the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661). Find early titles on diplomatic and military topics by searching on the subject headings listed for EAI.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO)

ECCO is based on the English Short Title Catalog, and contains the full-text of 150,000 book titles published in Great Britain between 1701 and 1800. ECCO provides, "in essence, [easy access to] every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom, along with thousands of important works from the Americas" (ibid.). Using Basic Search, enter keyword(s) of choice (e.g. diplomacy, military, war), then choose Title in the adjacent "Search type" drop down. Search results will be fewer but more relevant than if full-text search is employed.

Making of America Books via the University of Michigan (full-text resource)

"Making of America (MOA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history primarily from the antebellum period through reconstruction. . . . The book collection currently contains approximately 9,500 books with 19th century imprints." From the homepage, click on Other Searches in MoA. Enter keyword(s) of choice (e.g. diploma*, militar*, war*), and then restrict search to either title or subject fields. As with ECCO, search relevancy tends to be greater using this technique. If more results are desired, expand search to include full-text.

Military Education Research Network (MERLN)

Worldwide military libraries catalog of books and other materials. MERLN "represents a consortium of military education research libraries that work together to provide access to a variety of unique electronic resources for the use of researchers and scholars." Titles of interest, if not already owned by Temple, can be requested through PALCI E-ZBorrow.
