Center for Defense Information

"The Center for Defense Information is dedicated to strengthening security through: international cooperation; reduced reliance on unilateral military power to resolve conflict; reduced reliance on nuclear weapons; a transformed and reformed military establishment; and, prudent oversight of, and spending on, defense programs." A nonpartisan group, "CDI educates the public and informs policy-makers about issues of security policy, strategy, operations, weapon systems and defense budgeting, and pursues creative solutions to the problems of today and tomorrow".

The Center for Security Studies (Switzerland) sponsors the International Relations and Security Network (ISN)
"An electronic clearinghouse for resources in the field of security and defense studies, peace and conflict research, and international relations. Posts contact information via mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail. Lists the subjects and regions covered by ISN. Among the services offered are: an annotated links library, a limited area search tool (ISN LASE), a selection of resources on current world affairs, and specialized fact databases. The ISN also develops educational modules in the fields mentioned and acts as a platform for networking, dialogue, and cooperation within the international security community" (INFOMINE).

"The purpose of the Center for the Study of Force and Diplomacy is to explore the historical interrelationship of policy, strategy, and diplomacy in the conduct of international relations."

This organization seeks "innovative approaches to the emerging security challenges of the new millenium [sic.] ". Special attention is given to ways of reducing reliance upon nuclear weapons. The following broad concepts are covered: Military, WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction), Intelligence, Homeland Security, Space, and "Public Eye" (public policy applications of high-resolution satellite imagery). Provides links to news, editorial pieces, lists (with maps) of U.S. military/nuclear installations around the world, and the top 100 U.S. defense contractors in FY 2004. The aforementioned list barely scratches the surface of the useful information to be found here.

Henry L. Stimson Center

"Our mission is to offer practical, nonpartisan, creative solutions to the problems of national and international security through research projects of the highest quality." The highlight of this site is a very large and unique collection of letters, reports, and occasional papers on various security-related topics.

Institute for the Study of Conflict, Ideology, and Policy (Boston University)

Publishers of Perspective, a "bimonthly journal featuring articles by eminent contributors from the region" of the former Soviet Union.

Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations

The society maintains a set of web links for those working on diplomatic history.

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

This site provides access to primary source material from the Eighteenth Century forward.

Congressional Research Service Reports on Foreign Policy and Regional Affairs (Federation of American Scientists)

The Library of Congress's Congressional Research Service (CRS) creates analytical reports on various topics for use by the U.S. Congress. While the distribution of these reports is not limited by law or copyright, CRS does not distribute them to academic or public libraries, or even make them available on the internet. Various educational institutions and non-profits have therefore committed themselves to making the reports accessible online. This particular set of reports is made possible by the FAS. The University of North Texas Libraries offers a similar service.

Foreign Relations of the United States (University of Wisconsin Libraries)

"This digital facsimile of Foreign Relations of the United States is a project of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago Libraries. This is an incomplete run from 1861-1960 with missing volumes being added as they can be acquired and processed." Volumes published between 1861 and 1976 are also available online from the U.S. State Department.

International Humanitarian Law -- Treaties & Documents (International Committee of the Red Cross)

This database contains the full-text of 99 international treaties dating from 1856 through 2003. Search by keyword or browse by topic, date, or country.

Public Diplomacy Query (U.S. Department of State, International Information Programs)

"The PDQ database comprises a wide array of official texts, statements, publications, reports, and other documents on U.S. foreign policy, international issues, and IIP overseas programs. Among the categories of IIP materials available here are the daily Washington File, Electronic Journals, Article Alert, and Books and Documents Lists and other policy documents from the Department of State." The archive can be searched for documents back to 1990.

The Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States (Library of Congress)

"The six-volume set entitled The Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States, from House Miscellaneous Document No. 603 of the U.S. Serial Set, was. . . promulgated on August 13, 1888, by both houses of Congress." This full-text, primary digital document is a component of the incomparable American Memory Project, Library of Congress.
