Book Reviews in History: The Basics

The core history journal databases — America: History & Life (book reviews about the New World); Historical Abstracts (book reviews about the Old World); JSTOR (reviews of books with an older imprint); and ProjectMUSE (reviews of books with a newer imprint) — are all excellent tools for locating scholarly book reviews, as to a lesser extent is the interdisciplinary Academic Search Premier. Keep in mind, however, that all of the aforementioned databases also index, in addition to book reviews, scholarly journal articles, dissertations, editorials, and speeches, so be sure to limit your search to "Book Review" in America: History & Life and "Reviews" in JSTOR. The "Book Review" Document Type is not available for Historical Abstracts. When searching this database enter the keywords "book" AND "review" into separate search boxes, or enter the phrase "review article" into a single search box.

The following databases are dedicated book review sources.

  • Book Review Digest Plus
Includes records for about 1.3 million book reviews and 550,000 books. More than 100,000 reviews are available full text. Covers 1983 to the present. Reviews are drawn from both scholarly and general-interest periodicals.
  • Book Review Index [print only]
Book Review Index covers reviews published in peer-reviewed journals. Reviews written in such publications do the best job of situating monographs within wider historical debates.
  • Global Books in Print
Includes Bowker's Books In Print database of over 4 million U.S./Canadian titles, as well as Whitaker's British Books In Print database of over 1 million U.K. titles. Access over 450,000 full-text book reviews, mostly from trade & library periodicals.
