Reference Shelf

Reference works, i.e. encyclopedias and dictionaries, are an excellent source of facts, dates, events, biographies, explanations, surveys, bibliographies, and general overviews.  Use these to start your research or for quick answers to satisfy your curiosity.
  • Credo Reference  
      
    Very broad collection of relatively small reference works. Use this to look up facts, dates, events, and miscellanea.
  • Encyclopaedia of Islam Online  
      
    Most authoritative encyclopedia for Islamic Studies.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library  
      
    Database of dozens of encyclopedias and other reference works. Includes Encyclopedia Judaica, Encyclopedia of Religion, New Catholic Encyclopedia and more.
  • Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online  
      
    Online version of Oxford's classic dictionary.
  • Oxford Reference Online  
      
    Large database of classic Oxford reference works, including Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages, Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation, and Oxford Companion to Philosophy.
  • Religion Print Reference  
      
    Encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference materials in the Paley Reference Stacks on the first floor of Paley Library.
  • Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy  
      
    Most authoritative encyclopedia of philosophy. Great content and great interface.
  • Sage eReference  
      
    Sage is one of the premier publishers of scholarly social science books, reference books, and journals. Use Sage eRference for social issues of concern to religions.
