Temple University Community Engagement Guide

Partnership for health communities

This guide is intended to provide an accessible platform for a variety of information and resources related to community engaged research. It was created for faculty, staff, students, community members, community organizations, and anyone who is interested in conducting or participating in community-engaged research.

The College of Public Health’s Office of Community Engaged Research and Practice (CERP) partnered with Temple University Libraries to create this resource guide.  The development of this guide was led by Amy Confair, Associate Director of CERP, and Lauri Fennell, former Temple University Libraries liaison librarian.

Please reach out to cerp@temple.edu to learn more about community engaged research, and especially if you are interested in learning more about community engaged research at the College of Public Health.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement Definition:

“Collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.”

This is adapted from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Elective Classification for Community Engagement.

“Community engaged research (CEnR) is a collaborative process between the researcher and community partner that creates and disseminates knowledge with the 2-pronged goal of contributing to the discipline and strengthening the well-being of the community. CEnR recognizes and incorporates the assets and strengths of all stakeholders throughout the research process." (Adapted from definitions found on VCU and Marquette websites.)
