Library Resources in Canvas

A guide for instructors about embedding library resources in Canvas courses

What are course reserves?

Course reserves are high demand materials related to a specific course that professors make available to students via the library. E-reserves are downloadable via Canvas, physical reserves are available for short term lending at the library's Circulation Desk.

The instructional video below demonstrates how to add the "Course Reserves " link (formerly called Ares*) to your Navigation menu in your Canvas course. This link is separate from the "Library" link that may already appear in your course.

*The name "Ares" has been changed to "Course Reserves", but the steps to enable the link through the Settings-->Navigation tab have remained the same.

Embed course reserves in Canvas

1) Add Course Reserves to the navigation menu in your Canvas course

  • Log into Canvas and select your course.
  • Add the Course Reserves link to the Course Navigation Menu by selecting Settings and choosing the Navigation tab.
  • Under the Drag items here to hide them from students list, select the menuto the right of “Course Reserves” and enable it.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and save your changes.
  • Select the “Course Reserves” link you added to your navigation menu and choose a semester to be taken to the Course Reserves homepage.

2) Request items be placed on reserve

  • Make new requests or import items you had on reserve previously by choosing Add New or Import Previous items under the Instructor Course Tools Menu.
  • Choose “Import items” to the left of a previous or current course.
  • Uncheck the box next to any items you don’t want to import. Select Import items to complete the process.
  • Select a request form icon from the top of the page to submit a new request.
  • Fill out as much information as you can to help us process your request as quickly as possible.
  • Choose if you would like library staff to handle the request or if you would prefer to bring the material to us for scanning or for placing on physical reserve.
  • Upload your own file or request us to purchase items for reserve.
  • Choose Submit Item and your request will be processed.
