Electronic Devices and Technology at Ginsburg: Accessibility at HSL

Ginsburg Library has laptops and Chromebooks for loan.

Accessibility at HSL

The Health Science Libraries are committed to making our technology resources available to all persons with disabilities. In the general computing lab, you will find designated accessible computers that have additional software packages and hardware peripherals to make using the computer easier to use for those patrons with physical, vision, hearing, or motor skill difficulties. Additionally, the color and black and white printers on the first floor are within the recommended height parameters for optimal accessibility.

Accessibility Applications

Kurzweil 1000 - A patron can scan a physical book or document with either a scanner or camera and the software will read out loud to them the contents of the scan. - Available on our designated accessible computers on the first floor.

Read and Write Gold - a suite of tools that makes reading, writing, and research easier for those who may have trouble with these tasks as a result of dyslexia.

Jaws - screen-reading software allows visually impaired students to interact with a computer in much the same way as someone with full sight.

ZoomText - magnifying software also for patrons with vision impairment

Adaptive Hardware Peripherals

Mini Keyboard - With a mini keyboard, all keys are reachable with just one hand. The mini keyboards are available from the Circulation Desk.

Expert Mouse with Trackball - Some of the designated accessible computers have a trackball mouse in place of a standard mouse. The trackball mouse is sometimes easier to maneuver for those with motor skill difficulties. In addition to the trackball, these mice have shortcut buttons and have a scroll ring around the trackball for easy scrolling up and down.

Four-button TouchPad - The Touchpad is similar to a trackpad on a laptop and takes the place of a traditional mouse. The TouchPad also has four shortcut buttons.

Headphones - Headphones are available upon request at the Circulation Desk and can be used in conjunction with the scanners and Kurzweill software to listen to a book read aloud. Headphones can also be used for patrons who work with a screen reader such as Jaws.

Adjustable Arm Rest - Certain designated accessible computers have arm and wrist supports installed on the desk. These supports can help ease the physical strain on the hand, wrist, and arm while using the computers.

Headphones, Four-button TouchPad, Expert Mouse with Trackball, and Mini Keyboard are all available to check out from the Circulation Desk.
