We have a number of databases that are designed to help you find background information: the basic definitions and summaries that can help inform you (or your reader!) about a new topic.
One of my favorites is Very Short Introductions, from Oxford University Press. These brief ebooks introduce a new topic in an easily digestible format. I've highlighted just a few titles of interest below.
