Health Sciences Trailblazers

Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH, FAAP

The pediatrician and scientist exposed and helped address the Flint water crisis.

She discovered a spike in child lead poisoning that followed a change in the city’s water supply. Dr. Hanna-Attisha risked her career to reveal her research before its peer review, due to the urgent health implications.

She also developed trailblazing programs to lessen the catastrophe’s impact, including a center of excellence and a multi-million-dollar fund to support victims’ recovery.

The daughter of Iraqi immigrants, Dr. Hanna-Attisha is a professor at Michigan State’s College of Human Medicine. She has received many honors, including Time’s 100 Most Influential People award.
