The Ebook Central Research Assistant will automatically appear on the chapter-level Book Reader page for both EPUB and PDF formats for any eligible ebook titles that Temple Libraries owns or subscribes to. Research Assistant generates chapter-level key takeaways and concepts that are derived directly from the full text of each book chapter in order to minimize AI hallucinations and improve accuracy. The Research Assistant will appear on the left side of the ebook reader for PDFs or on the right side of the screen for EPUBs. It is represented by a circular purple icon with 3 stars in the middle.
The Research Assistant will generate the same response for each chapter, regardless of who the user is or when they submit the prompt. User interactions are not recorded or used to train the AI model. This feature is compliant with WCAG 2.2 guidelines (levels A and AA). Publishers and authors can opt out specific titles or series from use with the Research Assistant. Please note this AI Tool has built-in guardrails to restrict generation of offensive or inappropriate content, and chapters must be of a certain length to successfully generate AI results.
When you are reading an eligible chapter and the Research Assistant is open, it offers the options to generate key takeaways and concepts for that book chapter. After concepts are generated, a magnifying glass (search icon) appears next to each concept, and you may select it to run a keyword search in Ebook Central for that concept.
