Climate Change

Official UNFCCC page for the Kyoto Protocol, which describes it as “an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets.” The Kyoto Protocol entered into force on February 16, 2005; the United States has not ratified it. Official UNFCCC page for the Paris Agreement, which says that it “builds upon the [UNFCCC] and—for the first time—brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries to do so. As such, it charts a new course in the global climate effort.” 143 countries are parties to the Agreement, including the United States. One of the three international conventions adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the UNFCCC has been ratified by 197 countries (including the United States) and entered into force on March 21, 1994. This UN site says that “[p]reventing ‘dangerous’ human interference with the climate system is the ultimate aim of the UNFCCC.” The text of the UNFCCC is available to download as a PDF at this site in all six of the official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish).
