In 2014, President Obama convened a task force to identify best practices for community policing to reduce crime and build trust in law enforcement. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey co-chaired the group.
The task force presented a report of its findings in 2015. Sections address Building Trust and Legitimacy, Policy and Oversight, Technology and Social Media, Training and Education, and Officer Wellness and Safety.
The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office supports the implementation of task force recommendations. COPS provides assessments and technical assistance to local law enforcement agencies across the country. The Camden County Police Department is participating in the initiative.
With the help of COPS, the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) is undertaking a collaborative reform initiative. This report documents the PPD's progress on improving its policies, practices, and processes to monitor, assess, and reform the use of deadly force.
