Open Access Publishing Fund

The Library's Open Access Publishing Fund supports Temple researchers who would like to publish in an open access journal and need funding for the article processing charge (APC).

The Fund covers up to 50% of current Temple faculty, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and graduate students' portion of the APC, for a total of no more than $3,000, prorated by the number of Temple-affiliated authors. Each applicant may request up to $1,500 total per fiscal year. This amount may be split across multiple applications so long as funds are available. Hybrid journals (i.e., subscription journals that offer an open access option) are not eligible.

Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Open Access Agreements with Subscription Publishers

The Library has entered several Read and Publish agreements (i.e., Transformative Agreements) with publishers. To benefit from these agreements, use your Temple email address when submitting your work to participating publishers. Make sure you indicate Temple University as your primary institutional affiliation.

Cambridge University Press
In collaboration with Temple's consortial partner NERL (North East Research Libraries), the Library has signed a Read and Publish agreement with Cambridge University Press (CUP). Under this agreement, the Library will waive the article processing charge for Temple authors who wish to publish their article open access in a CUP journal.
Portland Press
The Library has signed an uncapped Read and Publish agreement with the Biochemical Society's publisher Portland Press. Under this agreement, corresponding Temple authors can publish their article open access in any Portland Press journal without paying the article publishing charge (APC). Springer Nature
In collaboration with Temple’s consortial partner NERL (North East Research Libraries), the Library has signed a Read and Publish agreement with Springer Nature. Under this agreement, corresponding Temple authors are eligible to publish their articles open access with fees covered in hybrid journals across the Springer Nature portfolio. Read the author guide to learn more. Limited funding will be available first come, first served per calendar year.

Open Publishing Waivers/Discounts

Many open access journals are free to read because they charge authors a fee, often called an article processing charge (APC). Thanks to various memberships and subscriptions paid for by the Libraries, Temple authors receive discounts on APCs from the following publishers:

American Association for the Advancement of Science
A 15% discount is available for Temple authors publishing in Science Advances.
American Chemical Society
A $500 discount is available for Temple authors who choose ACS "AuthorChoice."
BioMed Central (BMC)
A 5% discount is available for Temple authors who publish in a BioMed Central journal. In addition, the Library covers 50% of the remaining cost.
Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development
Temple authors who publish in this journal will have their APC waived.
National Academy of Sciences
Temple authors who publish in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences will get a discounted open access fee of $1100 (compared to $1450).
Nature Publishing
Temple authors who publish in the British Journal of Cancer are eligible for a reduced-rate BJC open fee.
Oxford University Press
Temple authors who publish in the Journal of Experimental Botany will have their APC waived.
SpringerOpen
A 5% discount is available for Temple authors who publish in a SpringerOpen journal. In addition, the Library covers 50% of the remaining cost.
