Library Guide for Japan Campus - Kyoto

Image of Marian Hall at Temple University Japan Campus Kyoto with flowering cherry tree in foreground

This guide is for students and faculty at the TUJ campus in Kyoto.

Although the Kyoto campus does not have a physical library, you can rest assured that students, faculty, and staff have access to all of the same electronic resources as the rest of the Temple community.  This includes a vast collection of ebooks, articles, streaming media, and more.  Faculty are encouraged to design their courses to take advantage of our electronic holdings and/or freely available Open Educational Resources to simplify access and to reduce the financial burden on students.

For those classes that require it, a physical course reserves collection will be available for time-limited checkout at the Kyoto Campus Information Center.

Additionally, Kyoto campus community members may request intra-library loan service for most of the physical books found in the Japan Campus Library in Tokyo.

If there is any information resource you need to support your studies or scholarship that is not available in our existing electronic or physical holdings, please let us know by submitting an inter-library loan request and we will do our best to meet your needs.

If you need help accessing library resources or services, please contact a TUJ Librarian via e-mail tujlib@temple.libanswers.com or use the Live Chat with a Librarian tool on the left side of this page.

Start Here

The TUJ Library homepage is the central hub for all of the resources and services available to you through the library.  We recommend bookmarking the homepage and always beginning your research journey there.

From the homepage, you can access:

  • Library catalog - search all of our physical and electronic resources in a user-friendly interface
  • Research guides and tutorials - how-to guides, general research guidance, and subject-specific guides to help you get started
  • Ask-a-librarian services - reach librarians via chat, email, or phone, or make an appointment for in-depth help
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Library hours
  • Library borrowing policies
  • Faculty Services
  • And more!

TUJ Library Catalog and Databases

The TUJ Library catalog is your gateway to discover books, journal articles, databases, and much more. Most of the content from Temple's many database subscriptions is included in the library catalog, so you can search across both our physical holdings and our electronic holdings in a single search platform.

You can access the catalog and all of the library's services via the TUJ Library homepage or launch a search immediately by using the search bar below.

For detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to use the library catalog, see our How To: Search in the TUJ LIbrary Catalog guide.

In addition to searching in the library catalog, you can also search directly in the specialized databases that Temple University subscribes to:

Accessing Electronic Resources

All of the library's electronic resources are free for TUJ students, faculty, and staff!

Many of the resources you find via the library catalog will require logging in with an AccessNet Username and Password to authenticate as a current TUJ student, faculty, or staff member.

Depending on the particular database, platform, and licensing agreement, you may be able to read an e-resource online, download portions of it, or download an entire work after authenticating.  Please note that some titles have limitations on the number of simultaneous users, so you may be blocked from accessing an item temporarily if other Temple University users are already viewing it.  If that happens, please wait patiently and try again a little later.

Difficulty logging in?

Please email tujlib@temple.libanswers.com. For more immediate help, see the 'I Can't Log In' help page.

Searching on other platforms?

We highly recommend linking Google Scholar to the TU library and installing the Libkey Nomad extension in your web browser to streamline your access to resources you find outside the library catalog.  These tools will save you time and money by directing you to library access points for publications cited on the open web.

Course Reserves

Information for students about accessing Course Reserves at the Kyoto campus is coming soon!

If you are a faculty member and would like to request materials to be placed on reserve for your course(s), please fill out this request form as early as possible before the start of each semester.

Accessing Physical Materials from the TUJ Library in Tokyo

Beginning in January 2025, TUJ Kyoto faculty, students, and staff may request physical items from the TUJ Library in Tokyo via Intra-Library Loan service.  Books can be requested directly through the library catalog and can be picked up and returned to the Information Center desk at the Kyoto campus.

Please note: You may only request physical materials in cases where Temple University does not have full-text online access to a title.  If you place a request for a physical item and staff determine that the content is available electronically, we will cancel the request and instead direct you to the online version.

To place an Intra-Library Loan request:

  • Search in the library catalog to locate the item you need
  • Log in to your library account
  • If the item is requestable, you will see a link Screenshot showing "Find in Library" heading with "Request: Request item for pickup" below, highlighted with an arrowfor "Request item for pickup" - click that link to open the request form
    • In cases where the item is currently out on loan to another patron, you will still be able to place a request for it, but be aware that your request will not be filled until the item has been returned, which may be several months in the future depending on the type of loan.
  • Select the pickup location "Japan Campus KyoScreenshot of library catalog request form, with the field for "Pickup location" highlighted with an arrowto" and click the "Send Request" button

Screenshot of pickup location options in expanded drop-down list, under heading "Japan Campus", "Japan Campus Library" and "Japan Campus Kyoto" with the latter highlighted by an arrow.

  • Wait for a notification email saying the item is ready to be picked up
    • The notification email will come from Temple University Libraries (notices@temple.edu) and will have the subject line "On Hold Shelf"
  • After receiving the notification email, go to the Kyoto IC desk within one week to check out (= borrow) your item

Note: Requested items that have not been picked up within one week will be returned to the Tokyo campus.

To return an Intra-Library Loan item:

  • Bring the book back to the Kyoto IC desk on or before the due date.
  • To check the due date, look at the date stamped in the back of the book, or log into your library account and view your current loans list.
  • If you would like to extend the loan, follow these instructions for how to renew a loan.

For detailed instructions on how to search in the catalog, how to log into your account, how to place requests, and how to renew items, see the How to: Search in the TUJ Library Catalog guide.
