The periodical Impulse established the first link between discourses in dance and the humanities while publishing a panorama of articles on dance, culture, life and art between 1949 and 1970. Edited by renowned choreographer and educator Marian Van Tuyl (1907-1987), Impulse is now widely considered the seminal collection and synthesis of scholarship, journalism, and documentation for dance in twentieth century American culture.

The Jerome Robbins Dance Division is the world’s largest dance archive and library with an international and extensive collection that spans seven centuries.

This collection consists of moving image materials that document the extraordinary journey of a woman who changed the face of American modern dance. The Collection highlights Dunham’s early explorations as an anthropologist in the 1930s as she observed a multitude of movement types and dance forms.
