ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)

Explore information about how to create and maintain an ORCID profile and the ways it can help support your research activities and career.

Set visibility preferences

Not sure you want to share all your information with the general public? ORCID allows you to specify the visibility setting for any section or individual entry within a section. The three levels of visibility allowed are:

  • Public
  • Trusted individual/organization
  • Private

For example, you may want a potential employer to see your entire profile to verify your identity as a scholar, but you may not wish to publicly disclose the year you received your undergraduate degree. You are in control of which details people learn about you when they visit your ORCID record.

Add professional accomplishments

Your ORCID record has sections for many types of information:

  • Biographical
  • Employment
  • Education and qualifications
  • Professional activities
  • Funding
  • Works
  • Peer review

There are many ways to populate your record with this information including manually, using a delegate, and importing from integrated systems. These options are available by clicking the Add button next to each section of your ORCID record.

Add works

Works are your research outputs, e.g., publications, datasets, conference presentations, and more. New types have been added including clinical study, moving image, musical composition, and learning object. There are five different ways to add works to your ORCID record:

* ORCID's Search & Link function allows you to automatically connect your publications to your ORCID record. Every time a publisher or repository connects a work you authored to your ORCID record, you will receive an email notification that a work has been connected to your record. Additional benefits include:

  • Save authors time in populating their ORCID Profile;
  • Use repository metadata for accuracy and standardization between how your publications are described; and,
  • Your publications are added by another source or an additional source, adding to their authenticity and provenance.

Display your ORCID

You should use your ORCID iD anywhere you are sharing your research:

  • Generate a QR code from your profile to add to professional posters
  • Resume/CV
  • Email signature
  • Personal website and lab/professional website
  • Online scholarly profiles
  • Author profiles on publisher websites
