Standards for Creating LibGuides

Publication Checklist

  Profile Box & Page
  Profile box is added to the guide homepage and displays in right-hand column
  LibAnswers and LibCal widgets are configured according to standards
  Profile box displays multiple options (phone, office number, email) for getting help;
  Guide Content
  Databases must be linked to the A to Z
  Database descriptions are brief and display beneath the item
  Video content from other institutions is used sparingly
  Images include alternative text (ALT tags)
  Search box is easy to locate and justification is provided if it appears next to database links
  Search box is reused, mapped either to an individual’s box repository or the primary box repository (code must be copied from box repository)
  Instructional content is easy to locate when scanning the page
  Instructional content is in a separate box, but next to the links from resources
  Page Layout for Subject / Topic / Course Guides
  Guide landing page (Get Started) adheres to a side navigation, two-column layout with core boxes listing requisite number of recommended resources and relevant guides
  Guide consists of 10 or fewer pages total
  Subsequent guide pages use one-column or two-column layout
  Subsequent page titles consistent with recommended conventions
  Mechanics
  Descriptive, narrative content is chunked in a relative manner to make reading and understanding easier
  Link labels are unique and descriptive, clearly telling users where they’re going
  Responsive Design
  Guide has been viewed on multiple devices to check responsiveness
  Writing Style
  Break up paragraphs with more than 5 sentences
  Use standardized terms -- refer to editorial guidelines
  Metadata
  Guide type and group assigned
  Guide subjects and tags assigned
  Friendly URL assigned for guide and each page
  Course metadata requested for Canvas integration
