Find Patents

esp@cenet European Patent Office.

International patents issued by more than 70 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, and Japan.  Japan and Germany issue patents faster than the United States. Search these countries' patents first for the most recent breakthroughs.  Espacenet offers free access to more than 70 million patent documents worldwide, containing information about inventions and technical developments from 1836 to today..S. patents starting from 1920, allowing you to search by author, title, or abstract words. Use EPO for finding U.S. patents issued between 1920 and 1975.

USPTO United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Full text of all patents issued since 1790. Searchable by patent number and classification number. Patents since 1976 searchable by keyword in the full text of the patent. Images are in TIFF format, requires special plug-in for your browser, such as "alternatiff" (alternatiff.com). If you can't install a TIFF reader, record patent numbers and pull up full-text via Google Patent Search

Need to find information on a topic from an authoritative publication? Try these sources to locate journal articles, papers, and other reports.

  • Compendex
    Compendex covers over 5,000 engineering journals, conferences, and reports. All areas of engineering are represented. Approximately 22% of the database is conference literature, and 90% of the source documents are in English.
  • Web of Science
    8,500 highest-cited journals in science & engineering in 150 disciplines. 1900-present.  In addition to searching by topic, can find who cited a paper. Offers good search analysis tools.
  • IEEEXplore
    Full-text access to over 120 IEEE journals, as well as transactions, conference titles, and standards from 1988 to the present with some items going back as far as 1950. (Updated weekly)

  • NTIS
    National Technical Information Service. Records of 2 million government technical reports. 1964 - present.

    The online edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica is a fully searchable and browsable collection of over 73,000 authoritative reference articles.
  • Kirk Othmer Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry
    Articles on chemical substances including their properties, manufacturing, history and uses. Includes many references. For example, click on "Topics" and expand "Energy" to find "Alcohol Fuels," "Natural Gas" and "Petroleum."
