Free email providers like Gmail and Yahoo Mail collect and save your data and also sell it to third parties. There are subscription alternatives to these free services that do not sell your data. On free or subscription services, use a strong password and two-factor authentication.

Protecting Yourself From Phishing

  • Don't email or text personal or financial information.
  • Only provide personal or financial information through an organization's website after you have verified correct HTTPS address.
  • Review credit card and bank statements to check for unauthorized charges.
  • Be cautious about opening attachments and downloading files from emails, regardless of who sent them.
  • When in doubt contact the business, person, organization that contacted you.
  • Do NOT use the contact information in the message. Instead locate known contact information (for example, phone number on credit card)

  • Do not use work computers and networks, or public networks, for sensitive communications
  • Adjust email, messenger, and social media privacy settings
  • Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication
