City Open Data Portals

Check for a city Open Data portal for your city. MANY cities now operate these as a catalog and download site for open data about the metropolitan region. They are often the official open data repository for the City, and include data sets from many organizations in the metropolitan region. Examples:

International City Data

Africapolis
Produced by the OECD Sahel and West Africa Club, Africapolis.org is a comprehensive and standardized geospatial database on cities and urbanization dynamics in Africa. Combining demographic sources, satellite and aerial imagery, and other cartographic sources, it is designed to enable comparative and long-term analyses of urban dynamics - covering 7500 agglomerations in 50 countries.

Business Insights Global is online resource on international business. It contains economic and statistical data that combines an international perspective and research tools with access to learning materials.

Eurostat
Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union. Their Data Browswer has detailed statistics on regions and European city statistics.
OECD Metropolitan Areas
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Regional Database has various data on metropolitan regions around the world.
UN Habitat Datasets
Includes global, city-level data on numerous topics, and the UN-Habitat’s City Prosperity Index (CPI) a metric designed to enable city authorities to identify opportunities and potential areas of intervention.
UN World Urbanization Prospects
Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations regularly issued estimates and projections of the urban and rural populations of all countries in the world and of their major urban agglomerations. See Data-->Urban Agglomerations for city data. This is a subproject of the annual UN World Population Prospects, which could also have relevant data.
UNdata
Statistical data compiled by the United Nations (UN) statistical system and other international agencies. Primarily country-level data, but some data series include city-level data, particularly those from the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) Demographic Statistics Database.

U.S. City Data

data.census.gov This link opens in a new window
data.census.gov provides data from the U.S. Census Bureau including the 2018 American Community Survey, 2017 Economic Census, 2020 Census and more. Limit Geography to a metropolitan area to get data for that city.
PolicyMap This link opens in a new window
Policy Map is a web mapping tool that includes a wealth of U.S. demographic, indicator, and policy data. Zoom to a city to see and download data values for any indicator you map.
SimplyAnalytics (formerly SimplyMap) This link opens in a new window

Simply Analytics is a web-based mapping application that permits users to create thematic maps and reports using demographic, business, and marketing variables. Maps can be exported as high-resolution images; data can be selected, sorted, and compared to build custom reports that can be exported to a spreadsheet.

State of the Cities Data Sets (SOCDS)
The SOCDS provides data for individual Metropolitan Areas, Central Cities, and Suburbs. Browse city data by topic, including demographic, employment, business patterns, FBI crime data, building permits, and more.
