African American Newspapers: The 19th Century contains information about the cultural life and history during the 1800s, with reports on events , including the Mexican War, Presidential and congressional addresses. Starting with the Freedom`s Journal in 1827 and continuing in chronological order with the addition of new text each year (downloaded monthly), this database will contain the complete text of the major African-American newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century.

19th Century U.S. Newspapers covers events, culture, and daily life in nineteenth-century America and features publications of all kinds, including major newspapers as well as those published by African Americans, Native Americans, women's rights groups, labor groups, the Confederacy, and other groups and interests.

Microfilm readers in the Charles Library are located on the first floor in the Special Collections Reading Room and next to the Community Computer Lab, to the left of the 13th Street entrance.
