-> How to: Search in the TUJ Library Catalog

Use this guide to learn how to search for books, articles, media, and other resources in the TUJ Library Catalog. Learn how to access your library account, renew books, save items, save searches, and place hold requests.

Requesting Items for Pickup

  • TUJ students and faculty can place hold requests directly through the catalog for items they wish to pick up in the library later.  For items that are not currently checked out, it generally takes one to two days for a hold request to be processed.  Once the item is ready, you will receive an email notification.
  • If you do not come to the library to pick up your item within seven days, it will be returned to the shelves.
  • If you place a request for an item that is currently checked out, you will be notified once the item has been returned to the library.  Be aware that in some cases, the due date may be very far in the future and you may be waiting for quite some time.
  • To pick up an item after you've been notified, bring your TU ID card to the library service desk and let the staff person know that you'd like to pick up something that is on hold.

To request an item for pickup, first search in the library catalog to locate the item you want to request.

From the search results page, click on the title to open the full catalog record.

If you are not already logged into your library account, you will see a prompt to sign in under the section header for "Find in Library":

After signing in, you will see any request options that are available to you for that particular item.  Options vary depending on the type of user account and the type of item.

Check the status of the item.  If it says "Available", you can expect to pick up it within a day or two.  If it says "Not Available", "Out of library", or "On loan", you can still request it but might have to wait longer.

Click on "Request item for pickup".  In the pop-up request form, the pickup location may default to "Japan Campus Library" or you may need to select "Japan Campus Library" from a drop-down list.  Click on the "Send Request" button to submit.

It might look like this:

Requesting Digitization (Faculty only)

For TUJ faculty only, it is possible to request partial digitization of physical books or journals.  If there is an article or chapter that you would like to post in Canvas for your students to read, but it is not available electronically through any of Temple University's subscriptions, you may submit a request for library staff to scan the material for you if we have a physical copy available.

Scanned material will be delivered to you as a PDF file, generally within a few days.

We are unable to provide scans of entire works.  Requests must include identifying information for the specific portion of the book or journal that you need.

To place a request for digitization, first search in the library catalog to locate the item you want to request.

From the search results page, click on the title to open the full catalog record.

If you are not already logged into your library account, you will see a prompt to sign in under the section header for "Find in Library":

Catalog record "Find in Library" section prompting user to sign in to view request options

After signing in, if you are a faculty member and if the item is eligible for digitization requests, you will see an option for "Request a scan of an article of book chapter":

If the item status is not "Available", you will not be able to request digitization.

Clicking on the request link will open a pop-up window with a digitization request form.  Please provide as much detail as possible about the portion of the item you need and then click the "Send request" button to submit:
