Database Search Strategies

These databases are Temple Libraries' main sources for researching health and medicine topics. Check the description below each database to see what topics that database covers and some recommended search terms to use when researching LGBTQ people and LGBTQ health.

Health Sciences Databases

CINAHL covers nursing and health journals, and some books, conference proceedings, and dissertations.

Search: GLBT Persons, Gay Persons, Gay Men, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender Persons to find articles on these groups of people.
CINAHL Abstracting and Indexing Database
Nurses, allied health professionals, researchers, nurse educators and students depend on the CINAHL Database to research their subject areas from this authoritative index of nursing and allied health journals. CINAHL indexes the top nursing and allied health literature available including nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses Association. CINAHL also includes rigorous curation and indexing of open access (OA) journals, which has resulted in a growing collection of 1,446 active global OA journals.  Once validated and certified for inclusion, these OA journals are treated with high-quality subject indexing and sophisticated, precise/accurate full-text linking.
Subject Headings
CINAHL Subject Headings help users effectively search and retrieve information and follow the structure of the Medical Subject headings (MeSH) used by the National Library of Medicine. These Subject Headings help researchers find new concepts, including COVID-19, social distancing and vaping as well as local terminology.

EMBASE offers references and journal articles on healthcare, medicine, and pharmaceutical topics.

AccessMedicine is an online resource and library that offers medical textbooks, videos, and self-assessments.

PsycINFO offers journal articles, books, and technical reports in the field of psychology and from the psychological subfields of medicine, psychiatry, pharmacology, and other related fields.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar covers a wide range of books, academic journals, publications, grey literature, and other sources of information. Temple Libraries provides access to the full-text of many of these article for Temple students, staff, and faculty.

To set this up, go to Google Scholar and click the three bar symbol in the upper left corner, then click "Settings", then click "Library Links". Search "Temple University" and select "Temple University Libraries", then click "Save".
