Due to low use, a high subscription cost, and the number of freely available citation and reference management tools, Temple Libraries will cancel RefWorks when our current subscription ends December 31, 2021.
All users who wanted to keep citations and PDFs stored in RefWorks need to transfer, move, or add them again to an alternate citation manager by 12/31/2021. After this date, Temple users’ RefWorks accounts are permanently inaccessible.

There are many alternatives (Wikipedia list) for citation management software, both free and subscription based. See the Citation Management Comparison Chart. for these three most used.
Exporting References from Legacy RefWorks involves extra steps of creating RIS files of text, copying and pasting into a Word or text document, and then importing that file into Zotero. It is highly recommended to use the new version if just for this ease of Export/Import. (Your password and all references are the same in the new version.)

Why did you cancel RefWorks?
We decided to cancel based upon rising subscription costs combined with low usage along with the rising prevalence of free citation management tools.
Can I sign up and pay for an individual account with RefWorks?
No, unfortunately ProQuest RefWorks no longer offers individual subscriptions

If I miss the December 2021 deadline to get my citations out of RefWorks, is there anything I can do?
Unfortunately no. You will be unable to access your account after 12/31/2021.
I am a Temple U alumnus who has been using RefWorks, will I also lose my access?
Yes. You will have to migrate your RefWorks citations to one of the other citation managers, even if you changed your log-in email address to a non-Temple account. Please note that only current students, staff, and faculty have access to Temple’s EndNote Online subscription.
