This guide is for SBS5002: Program Planning, Theory, and Practice, a graduate level course

Course Readings and Resources

Health, Social and Behavioral Theories

Theory as Subject Heading

For database with a controlled vocabulary (also called a thesaurus, subject headings, descriptors), in advanced search, enter the word "theory" or the name of the theorist to get a list of theories or a name of a theory.  To do a keyword search, enter a specific theory (e.g. conflict theory) in the search box and try searching all fields or the subject field.  The next section on Database Language provides guidance and links to tutorials on using database thesaurus and subjects.

Other tips:

  • Subject dictionaries, thesauri, and Credo Reference can help identify theories and sources.
  • Search Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and enter the relevant subject heading in the Subject field alone or with other terms (e.g. theory) in the Subject or in All fields.  Examples:
    • Health behavior
    • Health behavior--Age factors; Health behavior in adolescence;  Health behavior in children
    • Health promotion
    • Social sciences--Philosophy (used for Social Theory)
    • Action theory
  • Programs, evaluations, and intervention studies may also state the theories that inform their studies or programs. This may not always show up in the title or abstract. Looking at the table of contents or outline of the article on the publisher website may help to identify the section that discusses theories.
  • Web of Science does not have a controlled vocabulary but has subject categories and meso topics. You can enter a specific theory or from the results, look for theory in the discussion.
  • Use database guides, tutorials, search tips, tools, and help to efficiently search, filter, save/download, cite and more. Main database platform guides:  ProQuest, EBSCOhost, PubMedEmbase, Web of Science, Gale, ERIC, GovInfo

Platform-wide thesaurus and subjects

The ProQuest and EBSCOhost interface or platforms (multi-disciplinary database aggregators) provide full-text access, each has a platform-wide thesaurus that applies to ALL of its databases.

Gale has platform-wide subjects (located top right). There is also Topic Finder.  Its multi-subjects database is Academic OneFile.

Specialized thesaurus

These thesauri are useful and may be viewed on the website or platform.  Temple AccessNet ID is required to access ProQuest databases.
