Library Resources in Canvas

A guide for instructors about embedding library resources in Canvas courses

What are research guides?

Research guides are librarian-created guides to recommended information resources. Subject and topic guides help students get started on research for particular disciplines. Course guides are created, in partnership with professors, for particular Temple courses.

Manually embed library research guide content in Canvas

1) Set up or select a content area

  • On the top right of your Canvas course, click the “+Module” button.
  • Give the content area a name and check the box Publish icon.
  • Alternatively, you can also add research guide content to one of the existing content areas in your course.

2) Add the guide content

  • Click the "+" in the content area you just set up
  • In the "Add" dropdown menu, choose "External Tool"
  • Scroll down and select "LibApps Library Content"
  • In the "LibGuides Site” menu, select “Research Guides”
  • In the “Content Type” menu, choose whether you want to embed a full guide, a single guide page, or a guide "content box"
  • In the "Guide" menu choose a guide by name
  • If you are embedding a specific guide page or guide box, menus will appear to allow you to select this content
  • If you embed a full guide, you can select a “Guide Page” if you want to change the default landing page within the guide
  • Click “Embed Content”
  • Click "Add Item"
  • Publish the embedded guide item, and you’re done!
