Encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks provide excellent ways to get backgrounds, introductions, or overviews of topics. This is particularly useful: 1) to learn about a subject that is new to you 2) as a way to come up with a topic for an essay or 3) to come up with search terms when looking for journal articles.
The library has encyclopedias on all sorts of general (i.e. education, social work, psychology) and specialized topics (i.e. special education, distance education, urban education).
Two large online education encyclopedias to which the library subscribes:
Encyclopedia of Education
World Education Encyclopedia
Encyclopedia of Educational Psychology
Encyclopedia of School Psychology
Encyclopedia of Educational Leadership and Administration
A list Education related encyclopedias in the Reference area of Paley Library (first floor).
More can be found in the stacks (2nd and 3rd floor). Try doing a keyword search on a broad topic and "encyclopedias".
We also have a number of handbooks on educational research that may be of use.
